Wildfires burn thousands of acres in Peru

Wildfires in 11 forested areas have swept almost 12,000 hectares (about 29,650 acres) in rural areas, Peru's Civil Defense said on Tuesday. The dry season in the Southern Hemisphere, constant wind and the practice of local farmers of burning the land prior to planting could have led to the forest fires. The country's single helicopter with the capability to spout water in midair was used in an effort to assist local firefighters quelling the fire.
