Hundreds of public sector employees clashed with police in front of the Presidential Palace in Santiago on Thursday. They were protesting what they believe to be low wage hikes for 2017 that were passed by the Chilean Congress a day earlier. Some brawls broke out as protesters tried to break through police cordons near the presidential building, which forced security forces to shut down the premises. Police also fired water cannon in an attempt to disperse the crowd, but the demonstrators didn’t seem bothered, and some even began dancing under the streams of water. The questionable wage increase would see public sector workers’ salaries rise by 3.2 percent, which is lower than the four percent they had been hoping for.
