Clashes broke out as thousands of people marched through Athens on Thursday to mark the 43rd anniversary of a student uprising against Greece’s military junta. Leftists and students marched in front of the US Embassy to decry Washington’s “support” of Greek military rule between 1967 and 1974, before the demonstration descended into a clash with police, in which Molotov cocktails and rocks were used as projectiles. The massive Athens Polytechnic uprising that began 43 years ago on November 14, 1973 escalated into an open revolt which ended in bloodshed in the wee hours of November 17. Twenty-four civilians were killed in those clashes, while hundreds were injured.
