More than 2,000 sheep were guided by shepherds through Madrid on Sunday to celebrate and secure ancient grazing traditions and migration rights in the annual "Festival of Transhumance." The sheep were bleating and clanking bells as crowds of tourists and locals were taking pictures of the procession. Their route from Cuesta de la Vega to Alfonso XII traces a 700-year-old migration route through the Spanish capital's center, where open fields and woodland once stood. The shepherds paid a symbolical amount of a hundred “maravedis,” an 11th century currency, to City Hall officials to be allowed to cross the Royal Gorge.
