A golden retriever was rescued after being trapped under ruins in Villa San Lorenza a Flavione, just outside the town of Amatrice, in central Italy Friday. The dog had been trapped for over nine days after the region was hit by an earthquake on August 24. The dog, named Romeo, was discovered after he responded to his owners by barking.

The earthquake that killed an estimated 284 people was felt across central Italy, including in the capital Rome, some 126 kilometers (76 miles) away from the quake's epicenter.
