Around 100,000 people, including members of trade unions and political activists, gathered at Moscow's Red Square on Sunday, to celebrate International Workers' Day, commonly known in Russia as Spring and Labour Day. Activists brought Russian flags, colorful banners and balloons along to the celebrations while marchers were chanting slogans demanding better salaries and pensions and the improvement of working rights and conditions. This year the Labor Day celebrations coincided with Orthodox Christian Easter, one of Russia's most important religious holiday.
