Former Cuban President Fidel Castro made his first public appearance in eight months in Havana on Thursday, while marking the birthday of the late revolutionary Vilma Espin at a school named in her honor. State television showed the 89-year-old talking with school children and teachers, and speaking on the Cuban revolutionary spirit. He also described Espin, who died in 2007 and was his sister-in-law, and talked about her role in the creation of the republic.
