Iraqi security forces advanced to recapture the district of Hit on Tuesday, which has been held by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) since October 2014. Hit lies on the Euphrates River, 145km (90 miles) west of Baghdad and 70km (44 miles) northwest of Ramadi, making the city a strategic location between the Ayn al-Assad military airbase and the Anbar province capital, Ramadi. The operation to recapture Hit is part of a larger push by Iraqi security forces and their allies to retake Mosul in the north.
