Protesters vandalized the Russian embassy in Kiev on Sunday, breaking a window, throwing red paint on the walls and writing obscenities on the gate. The hooliganism happened during a demonstration calling for the release of Nadezhda Savchenko, a Ukrainian pilot on trial in Russia. Earlier in the day, around 1,000 gathered on Independence Square. They waved Ukrainian flags and placards in support of Savchenko. The Ukrainian pilot was detained in July 2014. She was charged with complicity in the deaths of two Russian journalists in eastern Ukraine and for crossing the border illegally.
