Thousands rallied in Melbourne on Tuesday, commemorating the suffering the Aboriginal people experienced after the 1788 First Fleet landing on what they sometimes call “Invasion Day.” On the same day Australians celebrate nationwide “Australia Day,” which Melbourne protesters denounced along with other demonstrators across the country. The protesters marched across the city, holding Aboriginal people’s flags and banners with slogans proclaiming “No pride in genocide” and condemning “Indigenous land theft.”
