Clashes erupted between police and activists protesting against a curfew in the city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey on Thursday. Diyarbakir has been under a curfew for almost a month amid ongoing conflict between state security forces and the PKK (Kurdish Worker's Party) in the Kurdish-majority cities in southeastern Turkey. Turkish security forces have undertaken a large-scale security operation to restore order in the area. It began on December 14 and has seen the imposition of curfews, aerial bombing and mass detentions. Turkey says it has killed at least 173 PKK militants since July, while human rights groups maintain at least 100 civilians died in the fighting during the same period.
