Thousands of pilgrims celebrated Our Lady of Guadalupe Day at the basilica named after her in Mexico City on Saturday. The pilgrims, who came from various cities across Mexico, carried depictions of the Virgin, with others walking on their knees as a mark of respect. Catholics in Mexico believe that the Virgin Mary "appeared" to an indigenous man known as Juan Diego in the XVI century. Some four million pilgrims are expected to visit the basilica between December 11 and 12 according to authorities. The Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world.
