Brazilian police fired tear gas and stun grenades at several hundred young protesters in central Sao Paulo on Friday. The protesters took to the streets to rally against school reforms proposed by the city's governor, Geraldo Alckmin. Ninety-four public schools are to be closed and merged in order to save money and in order to generate revenues through the sell-off of empty school buildings. Students and teachers oppose the plans, which they say will only worsen the existing problem of overcrowding in public schools.
