Clashes erupted between police and protesters in the Gazi neighborhood of Istanbul late on Saturday as pro-Kurdish activists took to the streets to rally against the killing of prominent Kurdish lawyer Tahir Elci. Protesters threw Molotov cocktails and fireworks at police who responded with water cannon and tear gas. Tahir Elci, the president of the Diyarbakir bar association, was shot dead during a press conference in the Diyarbakir province, earlier on Saturday. The pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) called the shooting a "planned assassination" and urged their supporters to rally across the country.
