Some 10,000 farmers gathered outside the Federal Palace in Bern, Friday, to rally against austerity plans that could see a reduction in state spending on agriculture. Peasants from across the country marched, with many ringing traditional Swiss cow bells. The Federal Council wants to cap its agricultural spending at 800 million francs ($776 million) for the years 2018-2021, around 100 million francs ($97 million) less than at present. Farmers say the council also wants to introduce additional responsibilities, including stricter rules concerning maintenance of the landscape.
