Some 25,000 Muscovites commemorated Russia's Unity Day with a march on Wednesday. People walked through the streets waving a wide variety of different flags. The march covered several kilometers along Tverskaya Street, finishing at Rojdestvenskaya Street with a concert. Unity Day was instituted as a national public holiday in 2005 to commemorate the events of 1612, when a people's volunteer army led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky liberated Moscow from Polish-Lithuanian occupation.
