A mother elephant helped her newborn baby escape from a dried-out canal near Coimbatore city in Southern India on Monday. The heavily pregnant 10-year old elephant had reportedly come from a nearby forest into Ponnuthu village to give birth. Brought out on to the street by the mother’s loud cries, passers-by looked on as the mother tried to assist her newborn up the canal’s slope, nudging the baby with her trunk in a bid to break for freedom.
