About 6,000 farmers on 2,000 tractors gathered to protest the European Union’s agriculture policy in the Belgian capital on Monday. Farmers and their supporters blocked the roads outside the headquarters of both the European Council and the European Commission, symbolically hung fake life-sized cows from cranes, and hurled eggs at riot police. The protesters were rallying against a fall in prices of agricultural goods and the large wall of bureaucracy and slew of taxes they face, which they say undermine their competitiveness. One officer was reportedly injured and taken away by colleagues after a firecracker went off nearby, according to the Ruptly video agency.
