Around 4,400 refugees and migrants were picked up by the Italian Coast Guard in Mediterranean waters on Saturday. The refugees and migrants were sailing on rafts and boats and got into distress off the coast of Libya. Coast Guard vessels transferred the migrants to Italian ports in a total of 22 operations. Over 100,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean and landed on European shores so far in 2015. Some 1,800 migrants lost their lives in attempts to cross the Mediterranean between January and June 2015.
