Astronauts at the International Space Station (ISS) harvested and tasted the first space-grown red romaine lettuce in history. Growing salad outside Earth became possible as a result of NASA's plant experiment system 'Veg-01'. Half of the food was frozen in order to be transported back to Earth for scientific analysis. While the Americans on the ISS crew were harvesting the lettuce, their Russian colleagues conducted a spacewalk, carrying out necessary maintenance work on the space station.
