Mourners gathered at Nagasaki Peace Park in Japan on Sunday to commemorate those who lost their lives during the atomic bombing by the US 70 years ago. Up to 160,000 were killed in Hiroshima on August 6 and up to 80,000 perished in Nagasaki on August 9 when the United States dropped atom bombs on the Japanese cities. Aside from the victims who died immediately in the attacks, tens of thousands of people suffered long-term effects, including those who died from exposure in the months that followed. The twin bombings were the first and only time nuclear weapons have been used in a war.
