Hundreds of pro-independence protesters marched through central Glasgow on Saturday to demand a second Scottish referendum. The demonstration followed a route through the city center to the sound of bagpipes and shouts of “Independence now!” Protesters were addressed by Tommy Sheridan, the founder of the Solidarity Party, who told them “Mr. Cameron will not decide the next referendum date. We, the people of Scotland will decide the next referendum date.” Pro-independence activists are particularly angered at the Conservative government in Westminster, who they say blocked further devolution of powers to the Scottish Parliament, and have recently ruled out the possibility of a referendum on Scottish independence during the current parliamentary term. A small number of counter-demonstrators held the British Union Jack flag in support of Scotland continuing as part of the union with the UK.
