At least nine people were injured and several vehicles burnt as members of two rival taxi driver groups clashed in the southern Mexican city of Chilpancingo on Monday. Members of Coalition of Transportation Servers of the State of Guerrero (COSTEG) took to the streets to rally against taxi drivers who operate without an official permit, accusing the State Coordinator of Independent Transporters of Guerrero (CETIG) of protecting the ‘pirates.’ CETIG members had previously set up a camp in the main square of Chilpancingo in October, calling on the state government to provide more permits for their members. Clashes broke out when the COSTEG members attacked the CETIG site, beating the campers, throwing rocks and setting dozens of cars alight.
