Thousands of anti-abortion activists demonstrated through Dublin on Saturday, at the annual Rally for Life event. A brass band accompanied the march as they set off from Parnell Square and many demonstrators held signs reading "vote pro-life." The march was met by hundreds of pro-choice campaigners who waved signs reading "think outside my box" and "no equality before body autonomy."

The march organised by the Life Institute, Precious Life and Youth Defence advocates a boycott of the charity Amnesty International after it called for the legalisation of abortion in Ireland. Abortion in Ireland is illegal, unless the mother’s life is threatened including from the prospect of suicide. The legal status of abortion has been a headline topic in Irish politics for decades, with recent opinion polls suggesting that a majority of citizens want a referendum on whether to abolish restrictions on abortion.
