Turkish riot police clashed with festival goers at Istanbul’s LGBT Pride parade on Sunday, using water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets in an attempt to halt the march, which had been banned by the city's authorities. Some in the crowd responded by throwing objects at the riot police. The event had initially been approved by the Istanbul Governor’s Office, but the permission was later revoked. The ongoing Islamic Holy Month of Ramadan was cited as the reason for the cancellation.
