A flamingo that has been fitted with a prosthetic leg after suffering from a fracture hopped around its enclosure in Sorocaba Zoo in Sao Paulo state on Monday. The pink-hued bird was given the custom-made fitting when the lower part of its leg had to be amputated to prevent an infection from spreading. Even though it is still limping, the Chilean flamingo is becoming more comfortable with the new leg. Once the bird has fully mastered using its new limb, it will be reintroduced to its group. The lightweight, 18cm (7 inch) prosthesis is made of carbon fiber with silicone ends, where the prosthetic attaches to the remaining part of the bird's leg. The leg was made by a local orthopedics office near the city of Sao Paulo.
