Kiev-born pianist Valentina Lisitsa played a concert in Donetsk on Monday, on the 74th anniversary of the start of the USSR's Great Patriotic War. Lisitsa played on a stage in close proximity to the Donbass Liberators Memorial in Lenin Komsomol Park. The commemorative day marks the beginning of Operation Barbarossa that saw Nazi forces invade the Soviet Union. The Ukrainian-born pianist has courted controversy over her vocal support for anti-Kiev forces operating in eastern Ukraine. Her scheduled performance with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra was canceled in April.
