NASA launched a balloon carrying its Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD), which resembles a flying saucer, from the US Navy Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) in Kauai on Monday. The vehicle's parachute failed to properly open high over the Pacific Ocean, making this the second time that an LDSD test has been unsuccessful. The vehicle is designed to safely deliver a heavy manned spacecraft on future missions to Mars.
