'March for Equality' in Chile to to support gay rights

Thousands of people took to the streets in Chile's capital on Saturday to demand more rights for same sex couples and protection for gender identity. A month after President Michelle Bachelet passed a law recognising civil unions between same-sex couples, demonstrators at the rally in Santiago said more reforms were still needed. President of the Gay Liberation and Integration Movement, Rolando Jimenez, said protestors wanted "a law (to protect) gender identity this year." The new law, to take effect in the next few months, gives same-sex and unmarried couples many of the rights granted to married couples. Partners can inherit each other's property, join one another's health plans and receive pension benefits.
