Clashes broke out between protesters and police during a demonstration in Port au Prince, Haiti on Tuesday. The protesters took to the streets to demand France return the so-called “independence debt”, which Haiti agreed to pay in 1825 to compensate colonists for their lost assets. Riot police used tear gas against the crowds, the Ruptly video agency reported. The protest took place while French President Francois Hollande was on his first visit to Haiti. Hollande pledged to pay back the "moral debt" to the impoverished Caribbean nation and said that France will invest in Haiti’s economy.
