5,000 teachers, public sector workers rally for pay rise in Germany

More than five thousand teachers, pre-school workers, firemen and police officers marched through Berlin on Wednesday, demanding an increase in their wages. The protest took place on a day of joint strike action organized by various trade unions, such as the Education Union (GEW), the Unified Services Union (Ver.di), the Police Trade Union (GdP) and the Construction, Agriculture and Environment Union (IG BAU). They are demanding a wage increase of 5.5 percent for teachers in Berlin and a raise of €175 ($185) per month for all public employees.
