The Villarrica volcano in southern Chile erupted on Tuesday morning, spewing lava up to 1,000m into the air, and forcing evacuation of approximately 3,400 people. A series of huge explosions sent plumes of red-hot magma thousands of meters high into the air. One of Chile's most active volcanoes, Villarica stands 2,847-meters high. Officials have closed down schools in the area, issued a red alert and cordoned off large areas in the vicinity of the blast.
