About 150 firefighters doused Moscow's Institute for Scientific Information on Social Sciences (INION), with water, Sunday following a huge blaze in the building. The roof collapsed and all three floors were badly damaged in the fire which consumed an estimated 2,000 square meters.

Despite the destruction many of the library's historic documents are reportedly undamaged. The blaze began at around 22.00 Moscow time on Friday (7 pm GMT) on the building's third floor. The cause of the fire is currently unknown. The library was built in 1918 and has just over 14 million items, including hundreds of rare editions.
