The Podemos political party held a mass rally in central Madrid on Saturday, drawing tens of thousands of supporters from all over Spain. The party supporters held banners decrying alleged government corruption, 'inbreeding' in Spain's political classes, and austerity measures backed by EU officials and the European banking sector. Both Pablo Iglesias, the party's leader, and Juan Carlos Monedero, a high profile Podemos member, were present at the rally. Founded in 2014, Podemos took eight percent of the national vote in the 2014 European Parliament elections only four months after its inception, and is leading in recent national opinion polls. A close ally of Greece's recently elected anti-austerity party Syriza, Podemos aims to fix Spain's ailing economy by reverting heavy public cuts and rejecting austerity measures which many supporters have blamed for Spain's 50 percent youth unemployment rate.
