Protesters and police clashed in Manama on Wednesday, as demonstrators called for the release of imprisoned Shia opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman. During the scuffles Salman's supporters threw rocks at police, who fired tear gas.
Salman, who leads the Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, was arrested on December 28. He has been charged with inciting a forceful change of the government, hatred of a segment of society, as well as provoking others to break the law, and with insulting the Interior Ministry.
The Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society has rejected the charges against Salman.
