Around 200 people took to the streets of Florence on Thursday to protest against European Union policy and what they call “the Europe of bankers and lords.” The protest was timed to coincide with German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s meeting with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. Demonstrators held pro-communist banners and shouted slogans against Merkel and Renzi. Several banners reading 'Remember Odessa' were spotted. It was a reference to the death of 42 anti-Maidan activists who were burned alive in the Ukrainian city's Trade Union building in May last year. Police presence was high to prevent protesters from reaching the heads of state.
