Thousands gathered at Omonoia Square in central Athens on Thursday, as the leader of the Greek left-wing party Syriza, Alexis Tsipras, spoke alongside head of the Spanish political party 'Podemos,' Pablo Iglesias. Tsipras said that Syriza will never accept the dictate of the EU and wish to renegotiate a solution for Greek debt. He added that it is Germany who must pay its debt to the rest of Europe, which helped defeat Nazism.
The parliamentary vote will take place on Sunday, January 25, to elect all 300 members to parliament after it failed to elect a president in December resulting in an early vote. Syriza leads the polls against the ruling conservative New Democracy party. The election has been characterized as one of the most important in Greece in 40 years.
