Hundreds of BAGIDA (the Bavarian section of the anti-Islamization PEGIDA movement) demonstrators took to the streets of Munich on Monday to be greeted by some 12,000 counter-protesters. BAGIDA activists carried anti-Islamist and banners critical of the state and accused their opponents of undermining freedom of speech and democracy.
In the German capital, hundreds of PEGIDA opponents confronted a rally of the movement's Berlin-based BERGIDA branch. The BERGIDA rally attracted about 300 protesters, while approximately 550 demonstrators joined the counter-protest.
Police presence was high in both cities as clashes between the two sides were expected, but the demonstrations were peaceful.
