Clashes erupted between members of a teachers’ union and riot police in the seaport of Salina Cruz, on Mexico’s Pacific coast, on Thursday, as a protest against Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s visit spiraled into violence. Demonstrators threw rocks and barriers at the police cordon, as well as set tires on fire. Organized by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) union, the protest was called to decry recent education reforms implemented by Nieto, who visited the city.
