The stadium is located in the Sochi Olympic Park and was built for the 2014 Olympics, when it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies. It has undergone reconstruction ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with temporary stands being placed behind the goals. During the Olympics, these areas were occupied by additional rooms.

The stadium has a capacity of 40,000. The arena got its name, Fisht, from a mountain located nearby in the western Caucasus.
