RT, the Islamic State and Boko Haram are three of the entities challenging US power, according to Andrew Lack, the new head of the Broadcasting Board of Governors. In an interview with The New York Times on Friday, the man charged with running the US’ state media included RT on a list of threats that included the infamous terrorist groups, leaving many wondering how an American public official could insinuate that a news organization and terror groups are similar. Chris Chambers, journalism professor at Georgetown University, and legal analyst ‘Lionel’ respond to the statement.
The US military sent special forces units to 70 percent of the world’s countries in 2014. Many conducted rescues or captured terrorist leaders, but a significant portion operated as ‘military advisors,’ training foreign soldiers to conduct warfare in countries Washington deems important.
