President Barack Obama’s oft repeated campaign promise to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility is nothing but empty words that have no chance of shuttering the prison, according to Breaking the Set host Abby Martin. On the six year anniversary of the commander in chief’s executive order mandating the military prison be closed within one year, Martin told RT’s Manila Chan that if the president does not uphold the obligations he made to the American public, the 117 prisoners who have yet to be released or even charged with a crime will die locked-up.
Why elected officials violate the US constitution and their oaths of office by permitting mass surveillance of their constituents is difficult to comprehend, according to NSA whistleblower Bill Binney. The veteran intelligence officer was in Berlin on Thursday to receive the Sam Adams Award in recognition of his efforts to bring transparency to the infamous spy agency, and told RT that although a former government worker, his mission is now to force that same government to finally be honest with the public.
