A man with a long criminal history and potential mental illness shot and killed execution style two New York City police officers in Brooklyn on Saturday. Hashtags used on the 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley’s Instagram account reference Eric Garner and Michael Brown—two unarmed African-American men killed by white police officers—and have prompted harsh statements from law enforcement and other officials now condemning the anti-police brutality “I can’t breathe” protests.
