The White House is denying claims that journalist Steven Sotloff was sold to Islamic State radicals by the “moderate” rebels the US has backed in the ongoing Syrian civil war. A spokesman for the family of the beheaded journalist cited sources on the ground when making the allegation on CNN, but the government has pushed back, saying there is no truth to his statements. Texas correctional authorities executed 45-year-old Willie Trottie on Wednesday evening. The Supreme Court refused to take up the inmate’s appeal 18 minutes before the procedure, sealing Trottie’s fate. A legal battle had raged for months before, as the state’s attorney general refused to reveal the source of the drugs to be used, leading to a series of legal challenges.
