Working with Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to counter the growing threat of the Islamic State would be extremely contradictory of the US, Georgetown University Professor John Esposito told RT in an interview on Thursday. Less than one year ago, the US was calling for military strikes to oust the “dictator,” but now faced with a common enemy, relations are complicating once again. RT’s Manila Chan has the interview.

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting Thursday afternoon to discuss the worsening crisis in Ukraine. US Ambassador Samantha Power directly accused Russia of intervening in the sovereign affairs of the country, while Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said the government in Kiev is not sincere in its calls for peace and accused the US of interfering. The meeting was the 24th on the Ukraine crisis. RT’s Marina Portnaya offers analysis.
