As Israel continues its assault on Gaza, many are now scrutinizing the nation’s relationship with the US. The largest single supplier of military equipment, Washington provided as much as 95 percent of the weaponry in Israel’s arsenal as recently as 2009. The Department of Defense did not provide adequate oversight and tracking for nearly 750,000 weapons purchased for Afghan security forces, according to a new report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction. Fearing that potentially tens of thousands of arms may have fallen into the hands of insurgent and other non-allied forces, the report calls for a revamping of the tracking process to ensure safety and accountability.
