As Iraqi forces square off with Sunni extremists marching towards Baghdad, neighboring countries are experiencing spillover and attempting to protect their own borders. Meanwhile, the U.S. is about to send 36 F-16 fighter jets to Iraqi force, but the country will not be able to use the planes for years. While fans are glued to their TV’s watching the World Cup in Brazil, attention is beginning to turn to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Reportedly a $45 billion event, nearly 1000 workers constructing facilities for the global spectacle have died since 2012. Another way to look at the figure: one worker death every 18 hours.
