Wimbledon begins on Monday and many believe the biggest tennis tournament on grass is promising, this year, to be one of the most interesting of recent times.
Russia’s Maria Sharapova is one of the favorites for this year's women’s singles. This season the 24-year-old has regained her old form after recovering from a shoulder injury. She is now looking forward to getting back to playing on grass.
She faces another Russian, Fed Cup teammate Anna Chakvetadze, in the opening round.
Many believe Sharapova will make the later stages with the likes of the Williams sisters – still a slightly unknown quantity after coming back from lengthy injury lay-offs of their own.
This season, Sharapova has also performed well on clay, her least favorite surface.
But after winning in Rome and getting to the semi-finals of the French Open she's now itching to get going on the grass.
“This is one of the best parts of the year for me,” she says. “It's one of the toughest transitions from clay to grass, but for me it's a lot of fun. The bounce is low, it's quick. It takes a couple of days to get used to the bounce and everything. A little frustrating at times, but it's a lot of fun.”
In the men's draw, it's a four-horse race according to six-time champion, Roger Federer.
Apart from himself, the world number three says Rafael Nadal, the in-from Novak Djokovic and home favorite Andy Murray are all capable of winning the title, making it one of the most interesting tournaments in recent years.
”I just think all four guys at the top right now feel very comfortable on grass; whereas maybe in the beginning Rafa was still looking a little bit for how good he was on grass. We all knew he was good on clay, you know, excellent on clay really, very good on hard courts, and grass you just never really get a chance to really prove yourself. I think as time went by, he showed how good he was; won a couple times here in the meantime. And Murray's game is very natural for this surface.I think Djokovic has always been great, but nothing extraordinary yet.But with the run he's on, obviously there's a lot of possibilities for him as well here,” said Federer.
