Serena Williams has received a record fine for her tirade at this year’s US Open. She will also be suspended in case of a second similar offense.
Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock told The Associated Press that Williams had been fined $82,500 for her US Open demarche and could be suspended from that tournament if she makes another “major offense” in the next two years.
Williams lashed out at a lineswoman after a foot-fault call at the end of her US Open semifinal loss.
Serena will be facing a “probationary period” at Grand Slam tournaments in 2010 and 2011. If she has another incident at a major championship during the period, the fine will increase to $175,000 and she would be barred from the following US Open.
The previous highest fine for a Grand Slam offense was approximately $63,000 to Jeff Tarango in 1995 for unsportsmanlike conduct and storming off the court during a Wimbledon match. In addition, Tarango was banned for two Grand Slam tournaments, including the following year's Wimbledon.

The more I think about my previous comment the more I like it. Serena Williamsova and her sister Venus Williamsova in the WTA top ten. What a standing ! Best Regards. Jean-Claude Meslin
What Sarah wrote is absolutly correct; Mc Enroe and Connors did a lot worse than Serena. Some times ago, there was a topic concerning Miss Williams who had the impression to be russian. Because, on the WTA's tournaments, she meet so many russians players. I have a good advise for the whole Willams' family: Move to Russia where there is less racism... Best Regards. I do believe that Roger Federor had words with a linesman and was not fined. I was watching the match with my 8 year old grand-daughter and she was reading Rogers lips and he dropped a few f bombs. Did he get a fined? Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. I do agree that a fine should have been given. Since it has I feel that we need to move on. I feel that the William sisters are not given their due as far as their class act for the game of tennis. We need to be happy that we have these great athletes representing the United States. Keep winning ladies.
