Current World No.1 Dinara Safina came up short of her fourth title of the year, as the Russian was beaten by Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in the Cincinnati Open final.
With Safina a shadow of her usual overwhelming self, the revived Jankovic was in control throughout the whole game.
Breaking Safina in the third game was enough for her to serve out the opening set 6-4.
The Serb, who had never beaten the World No.1 before, then stormed to a 3-0 lead in the second, and an out-of-sorts Safina failed to make up for this early deficit.
Jankovic hung on for a 6-4 6-2 victory to lift her second trophy of the year and secure her return to No. 4 number four in the WTA ranking.
"A good win for me. I'm happy that I'm back. I'm back in the, you know, in this group of players, and hopefully I can keep my form up," Jelena Jankovic said to the tournament’s official website.
And Safina, who keeps her No. 1 spot in the world rankings, confirmed that her rival was the better player on the court on the night.
"I think I was a little bit off today. Basically I would say it was not my day today. [The] few moments I was starting to get into the match, and she was, of course, using some good shots and hitting very close to the lines and down the lines. She played some great tennis today," Dinara Safina said.
